The Story Behind the Guatemalan Birds of Color
If you’ve spent time in my office, you may have noticed the bird tree a collection of brightly colored, handmade birds that often spark curiosity and conversation.
Each bird is created by hand in Guatemala by a local artisan named Juan. Over the years, what began as a simple introduction has grown into a meaningful relationship. The birds support Juan, his family, and his community, and they represent the beauty and dignity of skilled craftsmanship.
No two birds are exactly alike. Each one carries its own character, much like the people and stories connected to them.
For many of my patients, choosing a bird has become a way to mark a moment, celebrating better hearing, honoring a loved one, or simply giving back.
More Than Hearing Care
This annual trip is about more than hearing aids. It’s about listening, to stories, to needs, and to one another.
It’s about creating opportunity, supporting families, and building relationships that last long after the trip ends.
My patients are an important part of this impact. Through donated devices, support of local artisans, and shared generosity, the care we provide continues far beyond the walls of the clinic.
How You Can Help
If you’d like to be part of this work, there are several meaningful ways to get involved:
Donate gently used hearing aids
Devices that are no longer needed can be reconditioned and taken on the annual Guatemala trip.
Purchase or contribute toward a Guatemalan bird
Each bird directly supports Juan’s family and community while carrying a powerful story of connection.
Make a monetary contribution
Financial support helps fund hearing care services and ongoing assistance for local families. Donations can be made by calling the office or in person during your visit.
Every act of generosity, large or small, helps change a life.
