When you visit our clinic, you might notice something a little different. Hanging delicately on a tree are colorful birds, each one unique and made by hand in Guatemala by an artist named Juan. Many patients buy one to take home or gift to someone they love.
But what you might not realize is that those small, simple purchases are part of a much bigger story that’s helping change the lives of one Guatemalan family.
A Simple Act of Kindness
One day, a patient stopped by the clinic, chose a few birds, and left a check on the front desk. In that moment, I had a choice: send the money directly to the family who made the birds to help with immediate needs like bills or groceries, or perhaps do something greater.
While a small amount of money can help for a moment, education can change a life. I knew that the money could create a big change for Juan’s family, in thanks for his beautiful creations; with that in mind, I decided to not just send it back to Juan’s family, but offer an opportunity for his daughter, Angelica.
Meet Angelica
Angelica is the daughter of Juan, the man who handcrafts the birds you see in the clinic. Bright, driven, and incredibly determined, Angelica always dreamed of furthering her education, but like many young people in her community, the opportunity wasn’t guaranteed for her.
When I told her that she’d be receiving support with help from the birds her father made, Angelica was deeply moved.
"I cried with emotion and didn’t know how I could ever repay [Monica],” she recalls. “I thanked her deeply and prayed to God to always protect her and her family, to give her wisdom in her work, and I thanked God for placing such wonderful people in our path."
With our team’s support and the generosity of patients like you, Angelica was given that chance, and she enrolled in university.
At first, she began studying business, but over time, she realized her true passion lies elsewhere. Today, she is training to become a teacher and is now in the final stage of her degree, set to graduate in 2026.
A Different Reality: Building Something Big
While Angelica’s journey is inspiring, it’s also important to understand the reality she faces. Alongside her studies, she works as a teaching assistant, earning around $20 a month.
Even with a degree, opportunities can be limited. Building a sustainable future takes more than education alone: It takes support, guidance, and belief.
"Without money, I could not travel, I could not always afford food, I could not complete my assignments properly, and I could not have a laptop. In short, this was one of the biggest obstacles in my education,” she admits.
But thanks to the consistent support from the clinic, that reality is shifting. Angelica isn’t just thinking about graduating; she’s thinking about what comes next.
Together, she and her family are beginning to build something of their own:
A small tutoring business teaching English
A space in their home transformed into a “schoolhouse”
Plans to offer computer skills and repair services with her siblings
This incredible milestone marks the beginning of independence for many individuals in their community, a future where Angelica and her family can support not only themselves but so many more.
"I am thinking about starting a small project where I gather children to teach them how to read, write, and speak in English,” Angelica notes. “I would like to have a spacious place where I can work with them and support their learning."

A Future Built on Handcrafted Wings
Every bird on that tree tells a story of craftsmanship and connection. Every time you choose one, or someone gives a little more than expected, it contributes to something far greater than a single moment of generosity.
You’re helping fund an education, support a family, and build a future full of opportunity where it didn’t exist before.
It’s not just buying a bird or giving $20… it’s something much bigger.

Beyond the Clinic
Many of you already know that I travel to Guatemala each year to provide hearing care to those in need. But this story shows another side of that work.
It’s not just about what happens during those visits; it’s about the relationships built over time, the trust, the care, and the commitment to doing more.
Angelica and her family’s story is one of many, but it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when compassion meets action.

A Heartfelt Thank-You
To every patient who has supported this in any way, whether by purchasing a bird, making a donation, or simply taking an interest, thank you. Your kindness is reaching further than you might ever see in person.
Angelica shares a heartfelt message for everyone who has made an impact on her family's life:
"From the bottom of our hearts, my family is very happy and thankful for all the help you have given us. We may not know how you earn your money each day, but please know that we are always deeply grateful for your support."
Ready to see the birds in person and be part of this continuing story?
We invite you to view the handcrafted collection yourself, whether at your next appointment at the clinic or anytime you want to stop by the front desk. When you choose a bird to take home or gift to a loved one, you are directly supporting Angelica and her family in building a brighter future.
You’re helping a young woman graduate, helping a family build a future, and creating opportunities that will continue for years to come. And it all started with something as small as a handmade bird ornament.
