How Did I Get a Hearing Loss?

Genetics can play a significant role in hearing loss coming about; if your parents or grandparents wear hearing aids, there is a high chance that you’ll deal with hearing loss yourself. Fifty to sixty percent of hearing loss in babies is due to genetics.
External factors like disease or infections, especially in young children, can lead to hearing loss. Chronic ear infections and illnesses like Meniere’s disease can often have hearing loss as side effects. Certain adverse reactions to medications can lead to hearing loss.
The second-most common form of hearing loss after presbycusis is noise-induced hearing loss, or hearing challenges caused by loud noise exposure. When we think of loud noise trauma, we often think of a sudden explosion of noise, like a gunshot; the reality is that noise-induced hearing loss often comes about from prolonged exposure to loud noise, like when we’re sitting in busy restaurants or attending concerts without proper hearing protection.
